First prize - Queen Elisabeth International Grand Prize
Born in 1971 in Novosibirsk, Vadim Repin began playing the violin at the age of five and made his first public appearance just six months later. He gave his first concert with an orchestra at the age of seven and made his St Petersburg debut at eleven. In 1989, he became known internationally as the youngest winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The highlights of his career include tours with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, the NHK Orchestra and Charles Dutoit, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski, as well as the violin concerto dedicated to him by Sir James MacMillan, which he played all over the world before recording it on the Onyx Classics label. Vadim Repin has also recorded for other labels, including Warner Classics and Deutsche Grammophon, and won an ECHO Klassic award for his trio with Mischa Maisky and Lang Lang and a BBC Music Award for his collaboration with Nikolai Lugansky. In 2010, he was awarded a Victoire d’Honneur in France at the Victoires de la Musique Classique and was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres. Vadim Repin is an Honorary Professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The Trans-Siberian Arts Festival, of which he has been artistic director since 2014, takes place every year in his native region.

Second Prize
Suwanai Akiko studied at the Toho Gakuen School with Toshiya Eto, at Columbia University and the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay and Cho-Liang Lin, and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin with Uwe-Martin Haiberg. A laureate of the Paganini and Japan international competitions, she won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990 and was second laureate in the 1989 Queen Elisabeth Competition. Her international career has seen her perform recently with the Orchestre de Paris, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. This season she toured with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Sir Antonio Pappano), the Philadelphia Orchestra (Yannick Nézet- Séguin), and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen (Paavo Järvi). She has collaborated with renowned conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Sakari Oramo, Seiji Ozawa and Esa-Pekka Salonen among others. Her extensive discography on Universal has garnered much critical acclaim. She is also an Artistic Director of the International Music Festival NIPPON, performs on the Stradivarius ‘Dolphin’ violin from 1714, which has been kindly loaned to her by the Nippon Music Foundation.

Evgueni Bouchkov est né à Moscou en 1968, dans une famille de musiciens. Sa mère, Zora Shikmurzaeva, est une violoniste connue, lauréate de concours internationaux, dont le Concours Reine Elisabeth en 1963. Son père, violoniste également, est membre des Virtuoses de Moscou. À l'âge de 5 ans il commence ses études de violon avec Zenaïde Guilels; il les poursuit avec Leonid Kogan et, après le décès de celui-ci, avec Viktor Tretiakov. Il s'est perfectionné au Conservatoire de Moscou avec Valéry Klimov. Evgueni Bouchkov, premier lauréat du Concours Wieniawski en 1986, se produit en concert depuis l'âge de 9 ans en Russie, Pologne, Hongrie, France, Finlande et aux États-Unis, fort d'un répertoire très étendu.

Fourth Prize
Born in Israel, Erez Ofer began his violin studies with Ilona Feher, teacher of S. Ashkenazy, P. Zukerman and S. Mintz. Soon he began performing, and at age 12 he won the Israeli Broadcasting Service competition. At age 15 he was chosen to perform with Isaac Stern and the Israel philharmonic. A year later Erez Ofer was accepted to the class of Josef Gingold at Indiana University, where he won the I.U. Paganini competition. His studies were cut short by the mandatory military service in Israel, but after 3 years he continued his studies in Germany with Nicholas Chumachenco at the Freiburg Musikhochschule. In 1989 he won 4th prize at the Queen Elisabeth competition, followed the same year by the gold medal at the Zino Francescatti Competition in France. In 1991 Erez Ofer continued his studies at the Juilliard school in with Dorothy Delay. A year later he was the winner of the Munich Violin competition, followed by an offer to join the prestigious Bavarian Radio Orchestra under Maestro Lorin Maazel as concertmaster, which he accepted. In 1995 he was offered a new concertmaster position, this time with the Philadelphia Orchestra, which he held until 1998. In 1999 he joined the Amernet String Quartet, based in Cincinnati, Oh., as first violinist, which he held until 2002. Erez Ofer has performed as soloist with several orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Belgium National Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Bochum Simphoniker and others. In 2001 Erez Ofer was appointed concertmaster of the Berlin Radio Orchestra. He plays a 1729 D. Montagnana of Venice.

Fifth Prize
Ulrike-Anima Mathé, recognized as one of the most outstanding German violin soloists of present time, has studied with Françoise Zöldy in Basel, Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York and with Tibor Varga in Detmold. As soloist with well-known orchestras such as the Czech Philharmonic, the Stuttgarter Chamber Orchestra and the Hungarian Radio Orchestra she has received praising reviews for her fascinating interpretations, her suggestive expressiveness and her intelligent sensibility. International awards - for example the European Violin Competition 1985 in Vienna, the Young Concert Artists Audition 1988 in New York or the Queen Elisabeth Competition 1989 - were followed by engagements at internationally respected concerthalls such as Alice Tully-Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Philharmonie in Berlin resp. Cologne and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Ulrike-Anima Mathé is a sought-after soloist at numerous festivals such as Schwetzingen, Lucerne and Salzburg. As a chamber musician she is a regular guest at festivals such as Marlboro, Lockenhaus, Prussia Cove and Hitzacker. Her involvement with Contemporary Music and the studies of Historical Perform-ance Practice have added to her artistic profile. She has recorded for Dorian Recordings the complete Reger Solosonatas op. 91, the Korngold violin concerto with the Dallas Symphony and a Kreisler album with Sam Sanders. In 1999 Ulrike-Anima Mathé was appointed as violin professor at the Musikhochschule Detmold.

Catherine Cho is recognized for her remarkable virtuosity, combining technical mastery of her instrument with an extraordinary and distinctive musicality. Praised by The New York Times for her "sublime tone", she has appeared worldwide as soloist with many orchestras and chamber ensembles as well as in recital. Her repertoire ranges from the traditional works by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms to those of Bartók, Korngold and Berg, in addition to music of our time. Catherine Cho's orchestral engagements have included appearances with the Detroit, Montreal, and Washington DC's National Symphony orchestras, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the Edmonton Symphony, the Korean Broadcasting Symphony, the symphony orchestras of Barcelona, Haifa, and New Zealand, the Het Gelders Orkest in Holland, the Orchestra of the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and the Aspen Chamber Symphony performing with distinguished conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Robert Spano, Sixten Ehrling, Hugh Wolff, and Franz-Paul Decker. A regular guest on tour with "Musicians from Marlboro",she has also been a frequent participant in their summer Music Festival in Vermont since 1993. Catherine Cho has performed as special guest soloist with the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center for two ballets by renowned choreographer Peter Martins including the New York premiere of his ballet Viva Verdi. Her concert performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, with the Buffalo Philharmonic under the baton of Jo-Ann Falletta, was taped live and broadcast nationwide on National Public Television in January 2002. In broadcasts heard around the world, Catherine Cho has appeared on such stations as Radio Frankfurt (Germany), CBC (Canada), WQXR (New York City), and National Public Radio. Her performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons with the Korean Chamber Ensemble was recorded live and released on Credia Classics last year. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Catherine Cho has performed on the prestigious stages of Alice Tully Hall with the Chamber Music Society at New York's Lincoln Center, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Casals Hall in Tokyo, the Seoul Arts Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum of Boston, and on Ravinia's "Rising Stars" series in Chicago. She has performed the complete cycle of Violin Sonatas by Beethoven at HOAM Art Hall in Seoul, Korea with pianist, Mia Chung, and a recital of five Beethoven Sonatas at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival. Catherine Cho has appeared at the Aspen, Marlboro, Bridgehampton, Eastern Shore, Santa Fe, and Skaneateles Festivals as well as at Bargemusic and Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, OR. She has collaborated with such renowned artists as Richard Stoltzman, Andras Schiff, Anton Kuerti, Mitsuko Uchida; the members from the Guarneri, Orion and Juilliard String Quartets, and the Beaux-Arts Trio. She has been invited for several summers to teach at Mark O'Connor's String Conference in San Diego where she has collaborated with Mark O'Connor and Natalie MacMaster. She was a member of the Johannes String Quartet from 2003 to 2006, and is a founding member of the chamber ensemble La Fenice. Among her various awards, scholarships, and achievements, Catherine Cho was a recipient of both the 1995 Avery Fisher Career Grant and Korea's 1995 World Leaders of Tomorrow Award as presented by the Korea Central Daily News in recognition of outstanding achievement and commendable leadership in the Arts. She was the recipient of the 1994 Sony ES Award for Musical Excellence; a top prize winner at the 1991 Hannover International Violin Competition, the 1989 Queen Elisabeth Competition, the 1987 Montreal International Music Competition. In 1995 Catherine Cho served on the jury of the Montreal International Violin Competition. In 1996 she was selected for the Janet and Avery Fisher Music Residency Program at Goucher College. She holds a Masters Degree from The Juilliard School where she studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang, and coached chamber music with Felix Galimir. Her former teachers include Ruggiero Ricci, Franco Gulli, and Michael Avsharian. Catherine Cho is a faculty member of The Juilliard School and has taught at the Heifetz Institute, Killington Music Festival, Seoul Music Festival, Starling-DeLay Symposium, Perlman Music Program, and coached chamber music at the New York String Seminar. Devoted to the cause of promoting peace through music, Catherine Cho is VP of the Board of Musicians For Harmony.

At Durham University Mieko Kanno specialises in the combined disciplines of performance and musicology in contemporary music. In 1994 she received the prestigious Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstadt New Music Institute for the interpretation of contemporary music. Since then she has collaborated with many composers Europe-wide, commissioned and premiered new works, and has established herself as one of the leading exponents of contemporary music. Her current long-term projects are on John Cage’s Freeman Etudes and on music involving electronics (Mieko works on the AHRC funded project 'Live Performance, the Interactive Computer and the Violectra', a collaboration with composer Sam Hayden). She regularly performs these works in concerts - she is also interested in how musical works gain identity today and this research is much informed by her practice. In additon to her solo work Mieko Kanno is widely experienced as ensemble violinist and has been a leading participant in groups such as the New Music Players, Exposé, Apartment House, the Utrecht-based ensemble insomnio and others. She also plays the Baroque violin and has toured worldwide with the ensemble Florilegium. Her background is the traditonal school of violin playing. At the age of 19 Mieko Kanno was invited to England to study with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and achieved outstanding success in numerous violin competitions including the Rodolfo Lipizer Competition Italy (First Prize), London Carl Flesch Competition (Third Prize), Queen Elisabeth Competition (Seventh Prize), Tokyo International Violin Competition (Third Prize), Hannover Competition (Fifth Prize) and Jacques Thibaud Competition, Paris (Sixth Prize). Since then she has been performing worldwide and continues to do so today. Mieko Kanno joined the Music Department at Durham in 2001. Before coming to Durham she taught at the Trinity College of Music, London. She has held residencies at the Dartington Summer School (last in 2007), the Banff Arts Centre (Canada, 2008), and was Research Fellow at the Orpheus Instituut (Ghent, 2008-10, part-funded by the Leverhulme Trust). In 2010-11 she was invited as Senior Scholar by the Cini Foundation (Venice) to carry out research at the Archivio Luigi Nono.

Michi Sugiura has received prizes at the Queen Elisabeth, Menuhin, Carl Flesch, Montreal, and Japan International Violin Competitions. Her engagements have included concerts with orchestras such as the BRT (Belgian Radio-Television) Philharmonic Orchestra (Brussels), Knoxville Chamber Orchestra (USA), Filharmonie Bohuslava Martinu (Czech Republic), Gunma Symphony Orchestra (Japan), and recitals in Japan, Washington, and Brussels. As part of the Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival (Maine, USA), Michi Sugiura performed the Corigliano Sonata with famed composer John Corigliano present. The performance was received with high acclaim from composer and audience alike. Other chamber concerts during the summer festival included collaboration with Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, and Charles Neidich. As winner of competitions in the U.S., Michi Sugiura has performed with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra (Academy of Music), National Symphony Orchestra (John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts), and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Born in Washington D.C., Michi Sugiura was invited, at the age of 16, to attend the Curtis Institute of Music by renowned pedagogue Ivan Galamian. Upon graduation, she continued her studies at the Indiana University of Music. Starting with the tutelage of Berl Senofsky, her teachers include Ivan Galamian, Arnold Steinhardt (Guarneri Quartet), Yumi Ninomiya Scott, Miriam Fried, Franco Gulli, and Toshiya Eto. While residing in Indiana, Michi Sugiura joined the Whitney Piano Trio. Their concerts led to performances on the Phillips Collection and the National Gallery of Art Concert Series in Washington D.C., both of which were heard on radio broadcasts. The piano trio received government grants for an educational/concert series serving schools and communities in the Indiana and Kentucky area. Michi Sugiura held the position of Visiting Associate Professor at the Indiana University of Music. She currently serves on the jury of the prestigious Japan National Music Competition for Students.

Tenth Prize
Zhang Le came from a musical family in Shanghai, where his father is a violinist in the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and also a celebrated violin teacher. He studied violin first with his father and later with Zhang Shixiang and Zhao Jiyang at the Shanghai Conservatory of music. At the age of 13, Zhang Le won the first prize of the National Violin Competition in China. Soon after Dorothy Delay predicted a great performing career after hearing him play. Later, Zhang Le went on to win the Violin Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and immediately received a full scholarship from the Juilliard school to study with Dorothy Delay. Zhang Le was a prizewinner in the Queen Elisabeth Competition, the Menuhin Violin Competition in England, and the Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poland. Prior attending the Juilliard school, Zhang Le had studied for six years with Berl Senofsky at the Peabody Institute of Music. In 1993, he became the first violinist from mainland China to join the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Over the years Zhang Le has appeared frequently in recitals throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He also appeared as a soloist with orchestras including Maryland State Symphony, Denver Chamber Orchestra, Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Kumamoto Symphony Orchestra in Japan, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Grand Teton Festival, and the Orchestra of Aspen Music Festival.
