Biografie
Named as ‘one of the leading conductors of his generation’ Carlo Rizzi has appeared with the greatest orchestras of the world including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo to name a few.

Carlo Rizzi is in great demand in the finest opera houses of the world as well and is a frequent conductor at Teatro La Scala Milano, the Metropolitan Opera New York, London’s Royal Opera Covent Garden, Theatre de La Monnaie Brussels as well as Zurich Opera, Opera National de France Bastille, and the Netherlands Opera. He is also a regular guest at Houston Grand Opera.

Carlo Rizzi has held the post of Music Director of Welsh National Opera twice - from 2004 to 2008 and from 1992 to 2001. While Music Director in Cardiff, in addition to his mastery of the Italian opera titles, Rizzi’s repertoire at Welsh National Opera also included Fidelio, Boris Godunov, Peter Grimes, Tristan und Isolde, The Turn of the Screw, The Rake’s Progress, Der Rosenkavalier, Katya Kabanova, Salome, Ariadne auf Naxos, and The Flying Dutchman with Bryn Terfel.

In the 100th season of the BBC Proms he conducted the Orchestra of the WNO in their first symphonic Promenade concert. During his directorship the Orchestra also won may awards including that of the Royal Philharmonic Society. Since 1996, Carlo Rizzi has been a regular guest in concerts at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Recent and upcoming orchestral appearances include in North America two separate periods with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, debuts with the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Symphony; in Asia - the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra; and in Europe, with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre National de Lyon and the Orchestre of La Monnaie Brussels with whom he has lead the finals of the Queen Elisabeth Voice Competition in May 2011.

Operatically, Carlo Rizzi has conducted highly acclaimed productions in the past seasons as follows: two productions at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (Rossini’s Matilde de Shabran and Verdi’s Il Trovatore), Simon Boccanegra, La Boheme and Madama Butterfly at the Zurich Opera, La Juive and Fanciulla del West at Netherlands Opera, Pique Dame at Houston Grand Opera, Aida with the Bregenz Festival, and many others.

He maintains an ongoing relationship with the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Residentie Orchestra of the Hague, the Bournemouth Symphony, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic as well.

In 2004/5 Carlo Rizzi opened the new opera house in Cardiff (Wales Millennium Centre) with La Traviata followed by Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci and made his Austrian debut conducting the new production of La Traviata at the Salzburg Festival with Anna Netrebko Rolando Villazon and the Vienna Philharmonic.

In the recording studio he has worked with Teldec conducting Respighi Tone Poems and the complete L'Arlesienne music by Bizet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra among many other projects. He has recorded ten operas including La traviata, Rigoletto, Faust, La Cenerentola and Un ballo in maschera. Carlo Rizzi has also recorded for EMI, Philips, Sony, Decca and several others. Deutsche Grammophon issued a recording and DVD of his La traviata from the Salzburg Festival in Autumn 2005.
