Werner Scholz studied in his native town Dresden with Adrian Rappoldi. From 1948 until 1951 he was concert master of the Dresdner Philharmonie. In 1951 he became the assistent of Gustav Havemann in Cottbus and Berlin. He was the first concert master of the Berliner Sinfonie Orchester between 1956 and 1974 and performed as a soloist throughout Europe, often giving world premières of new works. In 1961 he became Professor and Director of the string department at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin. He gives master classes since 1974. Werner Scholz has been on the jury of numerous international violin competitions.
